San Francisco Street Food Festival

There are two reasons you need to mark your calendar for the August 20th San Francisco Street Food Festival. First, mobile food trucks are all the rage, serving up a host of ethnic and comfort food delicacies at affordable prices. This part goes without saying.

Second, this particular festival supports nonprofit La Cocina, an innovative good cause that’s helping low-income food entrepreneurs reduce obstacles in pursuing their small-business dreams. Making our community a better place just somehow makes the food taste better!

La Cocina invited more than 100 food bloggers to preview food from the approaching festival’s vendors. These culinary whizzes are creating dishes that would stand par with many 5-star establishments. We enjoyed Indian and Thai curries (the rare vegetarian fare), homemade ice cream, alfajores, Nutella crème brulee, and sophisticated tequila shots adorned with pretty daisies. My carnivorous table mates also dined on pork sandwiches, tamales, piroshkies, and so much more!

The highlight of the evening was having the opportunity to meet the enthusiastic and inspired professionals who prepared our food, like Azalina Eusope of Azalina’s Malaysian cuisine; Christine Doerr of Neo Cocoa, “Hearts of Chocolate Truffles;” and Rosa Rodriquez from Sweets Collection, “The Art You Can Eat.” These entrepreneurs beamed throughout the night, reminding us all that eating is not simply a passive act, but one steeped in community. We left with more than a belly full. We left fulfilled by this worthy nonprofit’s endeavor.
